A Chemical View of Enzymatic Transformations
Brief Introduction of Professor James Naismith
James Naismith is Fellow of Royal Society, Professor of Structural Biology at the University of Oxford, Director of the Research Complex at Harwell and Director designate of the Rosalind Franklin Institute. Before he came to Oxford, he was the Deputy of Biomolecular Science Research Complex at University of St. Andrews. During that time, he drove the vision, wrote the grant, secured University and Wellcome Trust funding for the Biomolecular Science Research Complex and oversaw its design, construction and delivery.
During his research career, he is focusing at the application of protein structure determination by X-ray crystallography coupled to molecular biology and biochemistry to probe biological mechanisms and to target specific disease pathways. He has ongoing research in 1) signal transduction 2) physical basis of protein carbohydrate interactions 3) pathogenic bacteria glycan assembly 4) viral replication 5) the biosynthesis of unusual natural products. Until now, he has published more than 220 papers in top journals including Nature Science and Cell. In 2000, he received Carbohydrate Chemistry Prize from Royal Society of Chemistry, in 2001, he got Leverhulme Trust Molecular Biology Prize and in 2004 he received Corday-Morgan Medal, in 2004, he was awarded the Colworth Medal from Royal Society of Chemistry, in 2009, he got Jeremy Knowles Medal, in 2012 he won Rita & John Cornforth Award. At last but not least, in 2014, he was awarded with Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award.
He was elected as Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2005. He was elected as Membership of EMBO in 2009, Fellowship of the Academy Medical Sciences in 2012, Fellowship of the Royal Society in 2014 and Fellow of American Association for Advancement of Science in 2016. For over 12 years, 8 years Chairman he was heavily involved in running CCP4. He twice wrote and successfully renewed funding for the project. He managed both the strategic and operational aspects of the entire suite. He has led the UK structural biology into the European X-FEL. He is the elected head of the International User Consortium for this beamline.
